S.P.R.E.A.D. #12 | 25 APR 2020 | Behavioral Economics w/ William
Although we have to practice social distancing, we can still socialize from the safety of our own homes. Covid-19 can’t stop us SPREADing the joy, friendship, and knowledge. In SPREAD #12, William Horner, our longtime friend, shares with us his knowledge on behavioral economics, specifically focusing on the psychological aspects of how our behavior can be influenced by our environment. This topic is inspired the book, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics. William read this book in high school and it has impacted his perspective on life, enabling him to recognize when his environment affects his behavior, which ultimately allows him to pause and re-evaluate instinctual actions or thinking. William introduces Kahneman’s Two Systems theory, where individuals either jump to quick, automatic conclusions or effortful, attentive decisions. Kahneman’s theory have important implications for how we understand ourselves and the impact of our envrionments.
